The Cyprus Tourism Organization (CTO) was awarded the Silver award for Best Destination for Responsible Tourism during the World Responsible Tourism Awards at the 2015 World Travel Market Expo in London, UK.
Founded in 2004, the World Responsible Tourism Awards seek out and celebrate the finest examples of responsible tourism around the world. Winners are announced each year at the World Travel Market Expo in London. Three destinations were awarded for Best Destination for Responsible Tourism at this year’s Responsible Tourism Awards. The South African town of Gansbaai won Gold, while Cyprus and Aruba were co-runners-up with Silver.
Responsible Travel praised Cyprus’ commitment to sustainability in travel as a year-round tourism destination that hosts millions of visitors every year. The Responsible Travel Awards particularly noted Cyprus’ agritourism product, which is gaining worldwide popularity as agritourists and ecotourists seek unique village getaways characterized by elements of nature, tranquility, culture, and heritage. The Cyprus Tourism Organization has made sustainability a focus in its hotel ratings around the island. This includes assessments on energy use, water use, employment conditions, local produce and food sourcing, guest education on responsible practices, and more. Encouraging guests to participate in responsible tourism means the promotion of activities such as hiking, cycling, archeology, cultural experiences, local markets, and more, all things that Cyprus has plenty of to offer. As an island rich in culture and history, Cyprus understands as well as anyone the importance of responsible tourism to help conserve and protect local destinations such as its UNESCO world heritage sites.
The Best Destination for Responsible Tourism award is presented to “destinations who put their unique community and environment at the heart of exciting and memorable tourism experiences; places which use tourism to make better places for people to live in and better places for people to visit. Whether a village, town, city, region or country, the Best destination category is looking for places that inspire and promote responsible holiday experiences that celebrate and protect the best of their destination.” Cyprus’ nomination for the Responsible Tourism Awards was supported by the Cyprus Tourism Organization, the UK’s Travel Foundation, and the Cyprus Sustainable Tourism Initiative.
