Philippines Senator Juan Edgardo Angara has filed a bill in the senate to declare Pag-asa Island a special ecotourism zone.
The bill argues for the declaration Pag-asa island as a special ecotourism zone in order to protect its environment and natural resources while promoting the island as a tourism destination. The bill is further evidence of the Philippines’ continued efforts to implement ecotourism as part of their travel product offering. This comes just under two months after the Philippines and Georgia signed an agreement on managing protected areas and developing ecotourism.
In Senate Bill 2939, there is a call for the creation of a Pag-asa Island Ecotourism Cluster Governing Board. The board would govern over initiatives involving tourism and environmental protection efforts. The board will comprise of the Mayor of Kalayaan, the Chairman of Pag-asa, the commander of the AFP Western Command, an environmental conservation NGO member, a business sector representative, a private sector representative, and an academe member. The board will work with the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority to create and implement ecotourism developments that will protect the environment, boost tourism, and create jobs in the local economy.
Furthermore, the bill sets forth plans to also declare the islands of Panata, Parola, and Kota as protected areas under NIPAS (the National Integrated Protected Areas System).
“With its impeccable beauty, the island is an ideal tourist destination. The rich biodiversity and Filipino heritage of the island truly reflects the beauty of a paradise that our country should be proud of.” – Senator Juan Edgardo Angara
